How Much Life Insurance Do You Really Need?

Image
Some people equate life insurance with tragedy and death. In truth, life insurance is for the living. Without it, the sudden demise of a key breadwinner could leave a family stranded without the resources to maintain their lifestyle—or even retain their home. Not so long ago, professionals recommended that families carry a life insurance policy with a death benefit of 10 times their annual household income. Today, however, in light of rising house prices in many parts of the country, spiraling college costs and low interest rates most advisors now recommend up to 20 times your household income. Unfortunately, most American families are underinsured. The gap between what households have and what they need is nearly $320,000, according to LIMRA’s study Closing the Life Insurance Gap, 2015. If you’d like to get a working idea of how much life insurance you may need (or how much more you may need), you can use our quick Life Insurance Needs Calculator. A Corners

You Don’t Need Life Insurance!

Most of us take more time planning our vacations than our financial futures. That’s why we decided that a quick chat with a top financial advisor might do us all some good. We spoke with Sarah Kaelberer, CFP, ChFC, who is a partner and President of Business & Estate Advisers Inc. in the Minneapolis area. She led us through some common misconceptions about life insurance and who actually has an “estate.” What mistakes do you see people making when it comes life insurance? People have so many misconceptions about life insurance. I hear people say, especially those that are just married or had their first child, is: “I don’t need life insurance.” And I always reply, “Of course you don’t. You’re the one who’s going to be dead. Your family needs it.” It’s not about what you need; it’s about what your family needs if you aren’t here. Mathematically I can show most people that they do need life insurance, especially those who are younger and who can’t self-insure ye

How Life Insurance Can Help Preserve Hard-Earned Retirement Savings

Saving and investing for retirement—it takes discipline and determination. It’s hard work, and the last thing you want is to find yourself with less retirement savings than you planned on having available. When you’re retired, the checks from your employer end, but your expenses do not. Groceries Cable TV Phone and internet Dining out Property taxes Mortgage (if you’re not so fortunate to have it paid off yet) Gas for the car An occasional trip to the cinema Auto insurance Vacations Medical, dental, and eye care insurance (not to mention out of pocket expenses) Prescriptions and nutritional supplements Gym membership The list goes on and on…. With all that to pay for, would your spouse or partner have enough to cover funeral expenses, too, if anything were to happen to you? How Much Does The Typical Funeral Cost? While none of us like to think about it, we also need to consider the costs of final (a.k.a. funeral) expenses. According to statistics from th

3 Things You Can do Today to Save Money on Term Life Insurance

Image
Term life insurance is the most inexpensive type of life insurance you can buy. But it’s still an expense many people either cannot or will not take on. Despite knowing how important life insurance is for protecting a family or a business, many people choose to live without it. In fact, one third of people surveyed by Life Happens and LIMRA wished their spouse or partner had life insurance or more of it. In the unstable world we live in today, that’s a big risk to take. People with no life insurance believe it costs three times more than it actually does. And those that do have it overestimate it’s cost by two times. Are you one of them? If so, what if I told you there are steps you can take today to save money on your policy? Would you take them? Factors that affect the Cost of Life Insurance We’ve talked extensively about life insurance underwriting and the many factors that contribute to the cost of a policy. Some of the primary ones are: Age Gender Healt

Life Insurance: When to Buy a Policy and How Much You Need

I want to share an important story about a friend. Her husband died in a car accident many years ago when her three children were still in elementary school. He was the sole breadwinner, working as a high school principal, while she stayed home to care for their young family. Although she had an MBA and prior work experience to fall back on, I can’t imagine getting forced back into the workplace at that difficult time in her life. Fortunately, she didn’t have to leave her children at daycare or with a nanny to earn a living because her husband was covered by life insurance. She was able to continue raising her brood knowing there was plenty of money in the bank, instead of dealing with her grief while also going on job interviews and feeling even more anxious and worried about their future. My friend and her children were able to better cope with the tragedy because they had the financial ability to maintain their standard of living and lifestyle. She could easily pa
